According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, but it is the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34; however, it is a preventable public health problem. Ninety percent of people in a suicidal crisis will give some kind of warning to those around them, including the following:
- Alcohol and drug abuse
- Statements revealing or suggesting a desire to die
- Sudden behavior changes
- Giving away personal belongings
- Purchasing a gun or stockpiling pills
- Previous attempts
Syntero is dedicated to the intervention and prevention of suicide and provides comprehensive services for adults, youth and older adults, as well as an ongoing support group for parents who have been pre-deceased by a child for any reason. Additionally, Syntero strives to increase community awareness about the correlation between depression and suicide, reduce stigma surrounding depression and suicide and increase education efforts to equip the public to recognize the signs or suicide and intervene when someone they know is suicidal.
